Reading Practice Times Through Tyre Run Plans and Track Limits

Tyre Run Plans Distort Early Comparisons

Headline practice times can be misleading for fans evaluating outright competitive order because teams run staggered tyre strategies. During opening practice for the 2026 United States GP: Leclerc and Ferrari started their program on medium tyres alongside McLaren, whereas Red Bull and Mercedes carried out initial runs on hard compounds. This initial tyre offset distorted early timesheets before frontline contenders shifted to soft rubber in the second half of the hour.

Evaluating single-lap pace on identical tyre compounds is only part of the preparation. Ferrari evaluated aerodynamic changes to its floor, sidepods, and diffuser during the session, and late running saw teams switch from low-fuel qualifying preparations to heavier-fuel race simulations, which naturally dropped lap times.

The Impact of Boundary Violations and Handling Compromises

Deleted lap times introduce another variable that clouds direct lap-time comparisons. Leclerc retained the fastest time at 1:36.052, beating Max Verstappen by 0.084 seconds, but Verstappen actually produced a quicker lap that was deleted due to exceeding track limits at Turn 19. That removal determined the official session order rather than proving Ferrari held outright pace across every run.

Mechanical balance quirks further complicated the run plans. Verstappen noted steering friction when turning left early in the running, while George Russell encountered sudden understeer, though neither issue was confirmed as an outright component failure. For fans tracking race weekend progression, practice times reflect an evolving mix of tyre allocations, experimental run plans, and boundary margins rather than definitive race pace.
