Strategic Lane Selection and the Cost of Late Decisions
NASCAR restart procedures allow drivers across all three national series to pick their preferred groove rather than being locked into strict inside-outside alternating positions. This mechanism lets crew chiefs and drivers weigh the trade-off between starting further back in the dominant lane or taking an advanced running spot on the weaker side of the track. However, committing to a lane comes with an immediate tactical risk. Drivers must declare their direction before reaching a designated track marker, because NASCAR choose cone penalties immediately demote any competitor who fails to commit in time or changes lanes after the commitment line to the tail end of the longest restart line.
Unlike in-race penalties that are served under green-flag conditions or via timed stops, this tail-end sanction alters the restart grid before the green flag drops. Losing track position in this manner forces a team to spend multiple laps fighting through dirty air and heavy traffic to recover spots they willingly forfeited through procedural hesitation.
Eliminating Pit Lane Gamesmanship
Prior to this procedure, only the race leader enjoyed the privilege of selecting their restart lane, which created unintended incentives on pit road. Trailing drivers frequently slowed or braked while exiting their stalls to manipulate which lane they would occupy when blending into the double-file restart formation. NASCAR resolved this gamesmanship by moving lane selection onto the racing surface itself, testing an orange V commitment marker at the July 2020 All-Star Race at Bristol Motor Speedway before adopting the rule for points-paying races starting at Michigan International Speedway in August 2020.
While the system governs oval restarts, NASCAR explicitly excludes superspeedways and road courses from the procedure. On tracks where the rule is active, race officials also coordinate subtle procedural steps to integrate wave-around cars and free-pass recipients into the running order while keeping lane choices orderly ahead of the green flag.
